Sabina U. Nies is a Fine Design Bookbinder and a Fiber Artist. She loves
combining colors, shapes and materials, and being playful with fabrics,
fibers and paper.
Born and raised in Berlin, Germany, with a family lineage of tailors, her first
career was as a professionally trained architectural drafter. Here she
developed her spacial thinking, precision, and creativity. After moving to
the US, she grew her painting and sewing skills, and became a founding
member of the “Lafayette Gallery”, California. Sabina expanded her skill
set to fine leather book binding and box making. She graduated from the
American Academy of Bookbinding in Telluride, Colorado, eventfully
teaching classes at the San Francisco Center for the Book, at several
schools, and at her private studio. She now entertains her own bindery
"SUN Book Arts" in Ashland, Oregon.
Sabina's varied skills allow her to create joy and beauty freely. While her
book bindings and boxes are made using traditional techniques and tools,
her diverse background empowers more experimental work. In addition to
book bindings, she creates wall hangings, table runners, sculptures and
lamp shades. Sabina's works are unique, skillfully handcrafted treasures to
outlast our fast flying times.
